I’d like to have a meeting THIS FRIDAY at the Rollingwood Pool starting at 6:30 PM. The topic will be how seeds are transported. Discover Magazine ran this amazing story about how seeds get carried. I’m posting images thumb nails - I can show you the real deal. We’ll talk about how and why seeds are transported.
PLEASE BRING some materials to make your own seeds. Good materials to bring are styrofoam balls, tooth picks, tissue paper, pipe cleaners, feathers, etc. Have your kids look at the pictures for ideas. I’ll bring a big fan for experiments.

I’ve lined up a natural caving trip (not a tour cave) for the Science Club on Saturday 12/9 11/18 (2 slots @ 9:30 AM and 1 PM). The caving trip complements our Fall study of the aquifer and water cycle. This is an unforgettable hands-on experience for kids to actually go into the acquifer. Parents are encouraged, but not required for kids 3rd grade and up (parents must go with 1st & 2nd graders). I will go with both groups.
We’ve can only take 30 people (15 per group) and I’m expecting that we’ll have a waiting list when I open this up to the whole school. Please reply to this post or email me to get on the list. It will be strictly first come/first serve.
This is a unique chance to go into nearby Whirlpool Cave near Slaughter and Rt 1. Whirlpool is a natural cave so there are no trails, lights, or commercial interests. We’ll actually be crawling around inside the cave and will get muddy. The cave is managed by the Barton Spring / Edwards Aquifer Conservation District for environmental education.
They use this cave for education and it is a perfect introductory cave for non-cavers. They have even led blind groups into the cave. The caving equipment rental is $10. I’ll be collecting the fee and signed caving_release.pdf forms starting immediately.

I’ve had trouble getting my schedule organized. I need feedback from everyone about the best time/place to meet. Friday nights work very well for me and I’d like to suggest meeting every other Friday. Comments?

I’m trying to put together a series of programs about the Aquifer and Water Quality for the fall. I’m trying to line up a caving trip to end the program. This should be very fun and I know it supports the school science curriculum for several grades including 3rd. Please let me know if you have expertise you can share with the group.
