UT Open House - Saturday 3/3: 11 to 5

The annual Explore UT Open House is coming on Saturday 3/3 from 11 to 5. This is a great event and I strongly recommend it.

Eanes Science Night Survey

We’re going to use SurveyMonkey.com to get feedback on this year’s Science Night.  If you attended the event, please take 5 minutes to compete the online survey: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.asp?u=490013268131

Frog Dissection (using model)

I saw an interesting frog dissection science kit ($25) yesterday that I think would make a great Science Club activity.  The kit is a model frog with organs and a skeleton.  You mold a plastic skin over the model to create a dissection model that can be “cut” with plastic scalpels.

What do people this about this option?  It is a little more pricey that most of our projects, but very educational.  You can reuse the frog.

Regional Science Fair Reminders!

If you are competing in the ARSF, you must:

  1. Register for Regional online;
  2. take a copy of their Elementary Project Registration Confirmation and completed Media Release Form to Katie Sisk by Wed (2/7);
  3. Attach a completed copy of the “Elementary Student Project Board Form” to the back of the science project board.
  4. keep a copy of their Elementary Project Registration Confirmation.  You MUST bring that with you when you take the project to set up at Regional (Friday 2/23).

Next Year (2008) Regional Science Fair

To plan accordingly for next year, the 2008 Austin Energy Regional Science Festival, February 20-23, 2008.

Don’t be confused: the 2007 Fair is on 2/24.

Helpers needed for Eanes Science Night!

Science Night is just around the corner (Wednesday 2/7) and I need help!

I’ve got great notes from last year and we can break the work into small parts. Each of these jobs is less than 4 hours total. If you did something last year, you have dibs on doing it again this year.

Getting Ready:

  1. Presenter Contacts - 3 volunteers to line up presenters. This is a FUN job. I have a list, but you’re welcome to add to it!
  2. Signs - certificates for 5th graders, signs at the event (I have templates)
  3. Publicity - this one is mine :)
  4. Optional - get Food donations for presenters.

Evening Of:

  1. Setup - 2 volunteers from 5 to 6.
  2. Tables - 5 volunteers for the blimp, electric circuits, hands-on (bridges, penny boat, etc), 2 floaters
  3. Clean-up - 2 volunteers from 8 to 9
  4. pick 2 of the above :)

I’ll be notified if you post a comment to this entry.

Thanks. Rob

PS: If you help setup or run tables at the event, we’ll feed you!

Caving Photos

I’m still collecting photos, but here is our current album (requires flash).

Contributors for photos are: Jim Babineau (AM trip).

Eanes Entries for Regional Science Fair

We’d like to send a team to this year’s Austin Energy Regional Science Fair. The fair is open to all grades and we can send up to 12 students. Our hope is that some 5th grades will extend their Science Night project to be an entry for the Fair. Students in other grades are encouraged to participate.

We’re using the 12/17 Baking Science Meeting to organize for the Science Fair. The timing is tight and we are hoping that people can get started picking out projects and doing research over the holidays.
Sarah Swanson and I have volunteered to coach a team from Eanes. Just comment on to this post or contact us directly if you are interested.

Baking Science: Sunday 12/17 @ 2-4 PM

We’ll host the Baking Science meeting at my house (4900 Timberline Dr) from 2 to 4.  If possible, bring a $5 for supplies, a mixing bowl, mixer, and baking sheet.  This experiment is LOTS of fun and you’ll be surprised at the results.

We’ll also be talking about Science Fair and Science Night.

Eanes Science Lab Work Day: Saturday 1/13

Saturday 1/13 is a Science Lab work day from 10 to 12.  This is a great chance to see what’s in the lab and make it easier for teachers to teach science.  We’d add some more shelves and better organize the items in the lab.
